Nelson Lakes NP ● 23 – 25 October 2021
Intended as a loop trip over Moss Pass and down the D’Urville, we had to turn around less than 80m from the pass due to snow. While inevitably dissapointing, not all was lost we got to see Rotomariewhenua (Blue Lake), one of the clearest lakes in the world. Plus we still made it to D’Urville Hut for the water taxi.
Heading up the Sabine, about halfway to West Sabine Hut
Look down the Sabine, about 1.5km from Blue Lake Hut
Looking out over Blue Lake towards Mt Franklin. You'll have to take my word for it that Blue Lake actually really was impressively blue.
Slightly less great views the next morning
Approaching Moss Pass with amazing visibility
Getting overtaken by pack rafters below Moss Pass. This is about where we turned around due to weather and avalanche conditions
Cloud clearing in the morning at Sabine Hut
Leaving via water taxi
