Tararua FP ● 26 – 27 February 2021
Eager to explore the local scenery after moving to Wellington I planned a three day loop around the southern Tararuas. However, it turns out that there isn’t a great deal to do on solo trips other than keep walking, so it ended up being an overnight trip. Highlights include the iconic Cone hut, coming face-to-face with a possum near the summit of Mt Hector, unexpectedly finding the Steel Ladder, and reaching the river at Neill Forks Hut after forgetting to fill my drink bottle at Maungahuka Hut.
Cone hut – a very cool old hut
Looking south from the ridge above Alpha hut
Setting out for a morning on the tops
A surprise ladder! Who would have expected that in the middle of nowhere? probably anyone who had looked at the map...
