Takitimu CA ● 24 – 25 July 2021
Taking advantage of two weeks in the South Island, I made my first trip into the Takitimu mountains. The intention was to stay at Upper Princhester Hut, but we arrived around 3pm, so we identified a candidate tarn to camp at and continued up. Possibly one of the best decisions I have made in a while, although it did mean we had an absolutely freezing (and windy) night.
Finding the first bit of snow was rather exciting
Finding more further upstream was even better
Looking north towards Mavora from the top of Princhester Stream
Looking down the other side of the saddle. We camped by the frozen tarn
A short traverse along the ridge in search of alternative camping spots (none were found)
Dropping down to the tarns
An absolutely STUNNING sunrise (only slightly exggerated by my phone camera)
Who could resist a selfie?
Heading back up
A rather less impressive sunrise by the time we got up to the saddle
Navigating obstacles on the way back down Princhester Stream
A cool rock
