Ruahīne FP ● 9 – 10 October 2021
Another WTMC trip, and my first excursion into the Ruahines. While the weather kept hinting at turning bad, and the wind almost made us turn back, we mostly stayed dry. The original intention was to follow the ridge down from pt1715, before dropping down to Waterfall Hut, but we discovered a scree slope that looked quicker (and significantly more fun).
A beautiful sunny day... just a pity we are heading into that cloud
Heading up the ridge from Smiths Stream Hut
Rainbow! Looking down into Smiths Stream
Almost perfect if it weren't for that pesky farmland
Inside that cloud. Shortly before pt 1715
View from pt 1673, looking at Rangi Creek. We had planned to head along the spur and drop down through the bush to Waterfall Hut, but decided to instead take a scree down to Rangi Creek and loop around to the hut. It was worth it for the scree run
Apparently I was in a very sombre mood
Looking towards Rangioteatua
The old Waikamaka Hut, no longer providing much shelter
Heading up to Waipawa Saddle. Featuring two trampers realising they are in a river bed and the track is not
