Tongariro NP ● 8 – 9 October 2022
Ever since moving to Te Ika-a-Māui I have been wanting to explore Ruapehu. Almost two years later, and I actually have a few of the requisite skills. We were treated to a bluebird day, and aimed to summit Te Heuheu. We took a roundabout route up the Whakapapa glacier and across the Summit plateau, to avoid potential avalanches on the northern aspects, but met some other WTMC members near the summit who told us that Te Heuheu ridge was safe, which turned the day into a perfect day loop.
The Official Write Up can be found here, or you can find some photos, and even a video below (it is excessively long, but that’s what you get when you combine a six minute song with far too much footage of my first proper alpine trip).
