High Ridge

Tararua FP ● 6 – 7 October 2023

A “day trip” along High Ridge (although we did head in to Powell hut on Friday night). We started early on Saturday, anticipating the day could be quite long, and began by climbing up to High ridge in piercing rain. The tops travel was fun, although it was good to get out of the wind and rain into the goblin forest. Travel along the ridge was surprisingly good as there is quite a well worn route to Flaxy knob. It was helpful to check GPS occasionally, as there were a few spurs which we almost headed down. From Flaxy knob we headed down a spur to Tōtora flats hut. The route here was more overgrown and harder to find, but had more frequent permolat and other markers, so was easy to know when you had lost it. By the time we were at Tōtara flats hut it ws sunny! After allowing our gear to largely dry over lunch, we headed up the Tōtora stream track. It was a bit of trudge up hill, but not too bad.
